With every passing year, acid stained concrete floors are more popular with homeowners across the United States. Surface Prep and Selecting Acid Stain Colors
Having been given our marching orders, we recommended the Bean-e-doo Mastic Remover to strip the glue of the floor in preparation for acid staining. Surface preparation is the most important step in successfully acid staining concrete floors. If that’s done right, most everything else will fall into place. Jack selected the Coffee Brown and Cola Acid Stain for the project. He wanted something that had both reddish-brown and dark brown elements to balance the white and beige colors of his walls and cabinetry.
Sealing and Wax the Floors
Jack wanted a sealer that would produce a deep, rich color but without being too high gloss or have strong odor during application. There was no question the Krystal Kote High Gloss Water Based was the best bet for his home. Krystal Kote offers a nice glossy finish and has no odor during application. This was important to Jack primarily because of his pets but over all wanted to keep the chemical used in his house to a minimum.
After applying two coats of sealer and allowing for adequate dry time, Jack finished the floor with three coats of Commercial Wax and Polish. He chose the commercial vs. residential wax because it has a higher solids content and adds a bit more luster as well as protection for the floor. If you have dogs in the house, go with the commercial wax.
Moving Back In
24 hours after the last coat of wax is applied the floors are ready for service but there’s a smart way to move furniture back into the home and there’s a not so smart way. If you drag heavy furniture across an acid stained concrete floor, it’s going to scratch. The best way to avoid damage while moving back into your home is to put Teflon pads under heavier furniture and carefully slide the pieces into place.
