Multi-awarded Church Floor & Prayer Walk Resurfacing Project

The First Presbyterian Church in University City, MO was interested in updating the floor where they hold their ceremonies. The area where the seats are previously had linoleum. The church members opted for a stain on the concrete floor.

There were several challenges with this project, all of which were pleasantly resolved. The first was that the linoleum had to be removed and the flooring underneath needed a microtopping. They also wanted to incorporate a “prayer walk” feature where they can walk in prayer and meditation. This is essentially a labyrinth and they wanted something that had to be stained with a different color from the seating area. The members had a specific design and measurement in mind which they later changed. Fortunately, our crew leader, who has 15 years of experience in decorative concrete, was there to make the adjustments.

Another challenge was when time came for the stain color to be approved. Their leadership board of 100 members was reduced to 10 people. We had to schedule all these 10 people to have a look and have their input as to what stain color would be appropriate. The stain color was adjusted a day later after the leadership board had a closer look but it was easily re-stained to their desired color.

The crew took about 12 days to complete the project but the delays were caused by certain adjustments that we had to make to satisfy the church’s members. The linoleum removal and microtopping went smoothly. When the stain approval day came, the leadership board chose the stain color to use on the seating area. We like to have everyone that makes the final decision to be there to approve before we proceed. The crew helped the board decide by comparing stain and labyrinth lines color samples. The prayer walk was very important to the church members because, for them, it symbolizes the journeys of faith and life, so we had to make all measurements, stain colors, and design accurate.

The church session was simply amazed at the transformation from linoleum to stained concrete. Their members are also enjoying their new prayer walk. Although there were some delays, our crew was able to complete the work quickly that the entire congregation only got to miss one Sunday service. The best part is that this project garnered two awards during the during the 2016 Sundek Awards. We received the Project of the Year award and the Dealer’s Choice Award. All thanks to our crew’s hard work!

Newly Improved Floor Boosts Restaurant Appeal

pirrones pizzeria florissant moPirrone’s Pizza is one of the well-known homegrown pizza joints in Florissant, St. Louis in Missouri. Although there have been good reviews on food and service, the interior definitely needed enhancement, especially the flooring. The existing carpet had food and drinks spilled on it and it was quite difficult to remove anything stuck to it. This doubled cleaning time for the employees. So they chose to have a custom chip blend with a multi-colored mix of all natural mica chips on a polyurea polyaspartic floor coating material.

The challenge with this project, like most commercial types, is that there is the deadline. The restaurant can only be closed for three days. The floor work needs to be completed on the second day because the third day is dedicated for other renovations, such as wall painting, mop board replacement, and more. Another challenge is the existing floor had a dark gray carpet on it. The crew needed to take the carpet and glue out. The glue was really tough and stubborn so grinding the floor took longer than expected.

We had a crew of six members arrive on location at around 9 PM on the evening of November 27th, which was a Sunday. They removed the carpet and glue and ground the 1, 650 square foot floor to prepare it for the coating. This took overnight to complete and the restaurant owner was kind enough to provide some pizza for our crew who worked late night until the next morning to complete most of the work. The crew went home at 9 AM the next morning and came back at 2 PM to proceed with the work. We used Sundek’s SunOne Poly 100 which is a fast-drying floor coating system. This is appropriate because the floor needs to be completely cured in just a day and it needs to be odor-free as dining customers will be back on the fourth day. All natural mica chips were also broadcasted onto the flooring to give it that granite and terrazzo look. The project was completed by 7 PM.

The restaurant owner and employees of Pirrone’s Pizza are very pleased with the new floor. The chips on the floor help disguise dirt compared to the carpet they once had which was very difficult to clean and maintain. The floor was smooth enough to make it easy to clean but had a slip-resistant surface, making it a safer floor to walk on, even when the waiters and waitresses forget to wear their grip shoes to work. The project went pretty well despite the short period of time available to complete it. The crew, despite their lack of sleep, have worked really hard and quite efficiently.
